Preeti, Renuka, Roger, and I were grouped together for the CG1102 Project. We chose Discussion Room 7 of the Central Library as the venue for the required filming of our project because it is an ideally serene place, and on top of that, it provides a beautiful backdrop for the scene of our project discussion.

As this was the first time I am doing a group discussion in front of a video camera, I felt awkward while trying to bring across my idea during the recording. In addition, since none of my group members did such filming before, none of us knew the appropriate manner to conduct such meetings. As a result, the flow of the discussion was not smooth; there were often awkward pauses in between each speech made. Despite the awkward silence and occasionally sidetracking during the filming of the meeting, I felt that it was a good learning experience, and a good start to all my possible filming projects ahead. I believe that we will appear much more natural on our next filming. As a Chinese saying goes “Wisdom comes from experience”.

On the whole, I believe that both teamwork and spontaneity is evident in my group. We were willing to accommodate to each other while staying firm on our ideas. Furthermore, since everyone was not afraid to voice out their opinion, all aspects and possibilities were discussed and considered during the brainstorm for ideas.

In conclusion, with everyone coming from various ethnic and culture, I believe after the project, I will gain both knowledge and communication skills while interacting with my group members.

  2. Hello Jonathon

I totally agree with you on the fact that filming your own meeting consciously was a little weird especially since we are all first-timers in this aspect. However, not to worry, as you mentioned, I am also sure that we will get used to this and become more natural with having our discussions filmed. I would also like to compliment your group for carefully choosing a suitable venue ahead of time as it is very important for a discussion, especially when it has to be video-taped. I also liked the way you linked this project discussion to effective intercultural communication since your group members have different ethnic backgrounds. In addition, the pictures you have included in this post are very interesting as they are humorous. This helps lift the readers’ mood as they read your post. Keep up the good work! However I felt that your reflections could have involved something more in particular about your own role in the team. That would have made your reflections more complete.

  3. Hi Jonathan,

Your views and reflections about your meeting were good and certainly all of us felt the same way as you did. I liked the part where you related teamwork to working with people of different cultures within the same group. It is quite important to know how to communicate well with people of different backgrounds and it is good that your group consisted of people from a mixture of cultures and that you were able to communicate well with all of them. It seems that your meeting was quite productive as everyone voiced out their opinions and ideas without fear and this clearly indicates teamwork in your group. And I hope that you will also overcome your fear and I wish you all the best for your next meeting!

  4. Hi Jonathan,

I feel that since these recorded meetings are planned, hence we can be better prepared for these meetings even though most of us have never experienced these types of meetings before. It is good that teamwork and spontaneity exist in your team since this shows the initiative of everyone. It is quite interesting to note that everyone can accommodate others ideas but still stay firm to their own ideas. I believe that this is probably because everyone’s ideas are quite similar. On the whole, it is good that the agenda of the meeting was completed and that you have gained a valuable lesson in cultural knowledge as well as communication skills.

  5. Dear Jonathan

I like your good and relevant pictures.

While I can sympathize with your experience of being videotaped, it would be good if you could catch any odd noverbal behaviour as well as note the negotiating style used in the discussion.

    Regards
    Happy
